VIJAY IYER & GRAHAM HAYNES

August 10 & 11, 2024

Misterioso

THE 222 is proud to present the World Premier of the 75 minute multi-media composition Misterioso, written and performed by acclaimed pianist Vijay Iyer and celebrated trumpeter Graham Haynes.

Misterioso, an exclusive commission funded in part by the National Endowment of the Arts, is a dynamic contemporary conception informed by the two artists’ lifelong indebtedness to the artistry of Thelonious Monk. The duo’s project responds to the question, “What does the inner Monk sound like?” The artists construct a fantasia of electroacoustic music and images influenced by the spirit of Monk: his reserve of stillness, his dynamic fluidity, his buoyant wit, his many moods, from exuberant to taciturn, and most of all his rigorous ways with sound and time.

“Monk was a master of rhythm, color, and surprise, and he was unafraid of extremes of vibration and sensation. Misterioso doesn’t recapitulate Monk’s music, but it zeroes in on how he dreamed, imagined, moved, listened, and felt.”

Described by The New York Times as a “social conscience, multimedia collaborator, system builder, rhapsodist, historical thinker and multicultural gateway,” VIJAY IYER has carved out a unique path as an influential, prolific, shape-shifting presence in twenty-first-century music. A composer and pianist active and revered across multiple musical communities, Iyer has created a consistently innovative, emotionally resonant body of work over the last twenty-five years, earning him a place as one of the leading music-makers of his generation. He has received a MacArthur Fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a United States Artist Fellowship, three Grammy nominations, the Alpert Award in the Arts, the Greenfield Prize, and two German “Echo” awards, and was voted DownBeat Magazine’s Jazz Artist of the Year four times.

Regarded as an innovator on cornet and flugelhorn, an extraordinary composer, and an emerging force in contemporary electronic music and world music, Graham Haynes has redefined and deconstructed that genre we call jazz. Haynes’s music combines technology to create imaginative, subtle sonic environments within a wide range of influences including African, Arabic, and South Asian. Amidst electronic processing, his horn stands out, providing a level of expression that humanizes and elevates his unique approach to jazz.  The son of jazz drummer Roy Haynes, he was surrounded and influenced by innovators including Thelonius Monk to which he will be honoring for this multi-media composition. Misterioso.

Vijay Iyer and Graham Haynes two night performances sponsored by the NEA, Anne Marie Montecuollo & Alan Lane, Sashi & David Cousins, Melinda & Paul Pressler, and an anonymous donor.
