Drummer Barry Hutcherson played in the band led by his father, vibes legend Bobby Hutcherson, during the final three years of Bobby’s life.  Barry’s mission now is to carry on the musical legacy of his father while adding his own signature. For this concert,  Barry Hutcherson has assembled a sextet of seasoned West Coast musicians, including pianist Joe Gillman, who played with Bobby for the last twelve years of his performance career.  Other members are Erik Von Buchau on vibes, J. Andrew Mell on bass, Darius Babazadeh on saxophone, and Joe Mazzafero  on trumpet.

Most of the music for this concert is based on Bobby’s 1966 Blue Note album Components and uses the same band configurations from that recording. The program includes “Little B’s Poem,” one of Bobby’s best-known compositions, written for Barry when he was a young child.  The concert repertoire will also include a nice mix of 1970’s Bebop and Latin tunes played by Bobby at the Keystone Corner in North Beach.

“So many great jazz musicians enjoy playing Bobby’s compositions,” said Barry, “and I’m grateful to be one of them. It is an honor and a challenge to play my father’s music.”
