Alan Broadbent & Harvie S Duo
September 6, 2025
When a jazz duo clicks, when two simpatico musicians share evident delight in each other’s company, the music unfolds in its purest form. Pianist Alan Broadbent and bassist Harvie S will share this kind of communion for this concert, rendering a set of succulent standards (and a few equally delectable originals) with the conversational brio of expert raconteurs. In whatever context he plays, Broadbent is one of jazz’s most lyrical improvisers.
“…a model of spontaneous improvisation in the tradition, pushing it in unobvious ways, with each note deeply felt.”
— Andy Hamilton, Jazz Journal
In whatever context he plays, Broadbent is one of jazz’s most lyrical improvisers. Broadbent’s linear and chordal concept is informed by Bud Powell, Bill Evans, George Shearing and Lennie Tristano, Broadbent’s teacher in college.
Broadbent’s bonafides as a poet, mastering both the languages of classical music, bebop composition and improvisation, are apparent. His solos extend for chorus after chorus, winnowing cleanly through difficult progressions with a steely confidence
As an accompanist Harvie S is one of jazz’s most acute listeners, and as a soloist he’s witty and playful, playing with a buoyant sense of time that puts a bounce into even the most melancholy ballad. And on up-tempo bebop, where Broadbent’s precise and even attack brings to mind Lennie Tristano, S finds his own way to keep the eighth notes surprising.
For this concert Alan Broadbent and Harvie S will showcase jazz standards from the American Songbook, performed as a duo with spontaneous improvisation guided by the mood and inspiration of the moment. Alan and Harvie have been performing in duo, trio, orchestra and sextet since 2011 and recorded over 9 CDs together.
