Heisenberg – Dec. 19

December  12-14, 19-21, 2025

Can an affair between a middle-aged woman and an older man be explored through science? This play takes the uncertainty principle—the idea that you can precisely measure a subatomic particle’s velocity or its position, but not both at once—and applies it to a two-character play. Sort of. As in his earlier works, Stephens’s concern is less with quantum mechanics generally than with the human heart’s particulars. In Heisenberg, the hearts reside in Alex Priest, an Irish-born butcher on the cusp of retirement, and Georgie Burns, a woman who might be an assassin and might be a waitress. Stephens’s great interest is how our perception of people and relationships alters depending on what we know, what we see, and whose side we see it from. Here, the laws of quantum mechanics interact with the sweetest and most unexpectedly basic boy-meets-girl plot.

A life-affirming mating dance between two people who are so utterly dissimilar that of course they are made for each other. The range of possibilities between the spaces in Heisenberg resonates in your mind long after it’s over; the unheard melody lingers on. — New York Times
