LITERARY ARTS – Programmed by Denise Low

Indigenous Voices Series: Diane Willie and Marla Anderson

October 10, 2025

Two artists with ties to Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico—a writer and a visual artist—discuss their shared heritage of pottery designs, feast days, dances, and colorful landscapes. Their pueblo is known for legendary author Leslie Marmon Silko and Silko’s father, photographer Lee Marmon. Allison (a Healdsburg resident) has a series of paintings based on Marmon’s iconoclastic photographs. Willie knew “Grandpa” Marmon and collected his works. In their own art forms, the two reach back to these recent influences and also to the culture of the oldest North American inhabitants. Allison will present art slides and discuss their connections to Laguna traditions. Willie will read from her book Sharp Rocks, fiction, and recent works. With the audience, they will explore common themes and aesthetics.
