One Black man’s reckoning with legacy and religion
Growing up Black and undocumented in 1980s Miami—with racial unrest, an immigration crisis, and a tumultuous drug war—was just another Tuesday for Rodney. In this comedy, Rodney Gardiner tries to abandon God, despite his deeply Christian roots. Smote This is an entertaining web of stories and tangents.
This funny, poignant piece about loss and growing up Caribbean Black contains some profanity, sexual references, and remembrances of being beaten as a child, and will be best suited for audiences prepared for the content.
I so loved how the performer was able to take a seriously heartbreaking tale about losing a parent, growing up Black in the 80s with all the struggles that it entailed, in a city far from the home he knew, and how impactful the church was in his upbringing and turn those into comedic gold! The universal themes of finding your way, navigating what legacy to pass on to your children, and figuring out how to honor those who paved the way is just some of the magical storytelling.

Our Venue
THE 222 is a small intimate venue. All seats are very good and have a clear view of the stage.
Seating for this concert is club style with round tables that seat four people. Seating will be assigned by the date of purchase, so the sooner you buy your tickets the closer you will be within the ticket level you purchase from.

THE 222 is all on ground level. There are no steps. All facilities are ADA compliant. Public parking is available on the north side of the building and along Healdsburg Ave. and Center St.

Wine and beverage service is available at THE 222 through Grapeseed Wines. Please come early to make sure you have time to get a drink and be comfortably situated at your table before the event.
Complimentary wrapped chocolates are provided at your table for most events.
