THE 222 is proud to present the World Premier of the 75 minute multi-media composition Misterioso, written and performed by acclaimed pianist Vijay Iyer and celebrated trumpeter Graham Haynes.  Funded in part by the National Endowment of the Arts, Misterioso will not simply be a performance of the music of Thelonius Monk, but a dynamic conception of music created by the lifelong influence of Monk’s music. The composition isintended to ask, and answer, the question, “What does the Inner Monk sound like by theorizing and creating a fantasia of music that is based on, and influenced by the spirit of Thelonius Monk, his foundational stillness combined with his dynamic fluidity.

A composer and pianist active and revered across multiple musical communities, Iyer has created a consistently innovative, emotionally resonant body of work over the last twenty-five years, earning him a place as one of the leading music-makers of his generation. He has received a MacArthur Fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a United States Artist Fellowship, three Grammy nominations, the Alpert Award in the Arts, the Greenfield Prize, and two German “Echo” awards, and was voted DownBeat Magazine’s Jazz Artist of the Year four times.

Regarded as an innovator on cornet and flugelhorn, an extraordinary composer, and an emerging force in contemporary electronic music and world music, Graham Haynes has redefined and deconstructed that genre we call jazz. Haynes’s music combines technology to create imaginative, subtle sonic environments within a wide range of influences including African, Arabic, and South Asian. Amidst electronic processing, his horn stands out, providing a level of expression that humanizes and elevates his unique approach to jazz.  The son of jazz drummer Roy Haynes, he was surrounded and influenced by innovators including Thelonius Monk to which he will be honoring for this multi-media composition.
